A New Reading Direction - Wagons West

"Wagons West by Dana Fuller Ross - 24 Books in a Series"
I read a lot. These days I try to restrain myself to a book a week. Anyway, love the series I have almost completed written by Dana Ross. Composed of 24 books and I've read 18 of them. The series is fiction based on factual information.
There's nothing like a fluffy novel to wile my time away but these books spiked my interest. So much so that I now have a bag full of books on the Civil war from our library - ackk- not quite as entertaining as Ross'! The librarian looked me up and down trying to get a hint as to why "she" would request Civil books. "Well, Dear, I'm about as boring as your Civil War books, if you really want to know". I have to admit they were so dry that I skimmed thru some of them - Ross presented info in a much more entertaining style!
The series is actually not about the Civil war but the author weaves history into it. Such a good writer, I felt I was riding in covered wagons bumping along dusty trails with them - I guess it felt familiar because of our local roads! (Oh, don't get your shirt in a knot there, council, it's true.)

We should honor the memory of the brave men and especially their women and children who decided to head West in a hostile land. Learned a lot about how they lived in covered wagons and slept and carried provisions. For schools, toss the textbook and give the kids this series They would learn so much and come away with an awesome understanding of the "settling of the West" and remember what they read. Plus it's an excellent read on human relationships, cooperation and wonderful fight against racism - yup, lots in those days, also. (Don't get me started- that's another post, ha!)
