So I have been wondering how I could help someone this Christmas and - - - my idea!
On a recent flight, the handle of my large suitcase wouldn't collapse. Alaska immediately tagged my bag as being received damaged and away I flew. Luckily, it didn't break off in the luggage compartment.
To make a long story short, I'm going to fill the case with long johns, warm socks, mitts, toiletries and all kinds of nonperishable food items. Then I'll troll the streets til I see someone struggling with shopping bags and give them my case.
What a windfall that will be - it's large and has all kinds of exterior pockets.
I challenge you to check around your home for a large bag of any kind, fill it and find some person who needs a hand.

What a warm, thoughtful idea!
Great idea Jean!
Jean--I belong to an online sort of place as your description.
I have written about it before--Freecycle. You can look up Freecycle.org and see if there's one near you.
The idea is simple--offer something for free, people respond who want it, you pick who gets it and arrange a way to deliver it. People can come to your place, if you like, OR you can arrange a mutual neutral area to meet and hand the item to them.
So far, I have given away about 200 items! Suitcases included.
